Someone shares a confident statistic. You have twenty minutes to work out whether it is real.

What this trains: Trace a viral claim back to its origin and see what changed on the way.

The situation

A message arrives in a group chat:

“Studies show 90% of startups fail in the first year.”

Nobody questions it. Somebody adds a fire emoji. It gets forwarded.

You have twenty minutes.

Your task

Work out where this claim comes from and whether it survives contact with its source.

Produce four lines:

  1. The original publisher and year, if you can reach one.
  2. What the original actually claimed, in its own words.
  3. What got dropped or changed on the way to the group chat.
  4. Your verdict: accurate, exaggerated, or could not be verified.

How this is evaluated

Reflection

Would you have questioned this claim if you had seen it in the chat rather than in a lab? Most people would not. That is the honest reason this skill needs practice rather than agreement.

Your attempt

Constraints

  • You must reach the original publisher, not an article about it
  • Twenty minutes maximum
